Elliptical Trainer vs Treadmill:

Elliptical trainers and treadmills are by far the most popular cardiovascular workout machines in gyms and homes. The similarities are readily apparent, but there are a few major differences that set the two apart distinctly. Both machines are used to aid in weight loss, or help train athletes to excel in sports via indoor use which makes them both viable for home and gym use alike.

The major difference between the two is the safety and health concerns. Elliptical trainers are much safer, as they do not put unnecessary strain on joints like treadmills will. Treadmills, like running, exert pressure on joints that can lead to injury or pain. Elliptical trainers have a more fluid and smooth resistive motion that eliminates this side effect. Treadmills are considered to be more safe than running outdoors, but they are surpassed by elliptical trainers in increased safety.

Elliptical trainers also provide more resistance than treadmills do. Treadmills imitate actual running motions, and therefore have a set resistance. However, elliptical trainers can add resistance to steps that makes workouts more strenuous and effective. For this reason, elliptical trainers are often favored by athletes who are looking to get the most effective workout possible. Those who do not always have the time to workout also benefit from this, since a faster more strenuous workout means less time on the machine in use.

Most treadmills do not tilt, which makes sloped running impossible. On the other hand, elliptical trainers yet again surpass the treadmill by offering different motions for exercise. These different types of motions also provide more of a change from the normal- which treadmills do not possess. The same, repetitive, motions that the treadmill requires will make users much more bored quicker, than on elliptical trainers. While athletes most likely won’t benefit from this, prospective weight loss users may see a bit of boredom and loss of motivation on treadmills faster than on elliptical trainers.

Overall, treadmills and elliptical trainers are very alike. Both use electricity, take up a good amount of space, and can hold quite a price tag. However, the benefits to be had from the two machines are well worth it, whether it be in gyms or home use. In the end, the elliptical trainer has more benefits over the treadmill, but both machines are perfectly suited for a great cardiovascular workout. From athletes to those looking to lose some weight, both of these machines are very effective in achieving exercise goals.
